How a Master Key Works and How it Can Deter Unauthorized Entry

,

A master key is every building's superintendent or hotel manager’s secret to stay in charge of the overall security of the premises they are guarding 24/7. Most especially on leased living spaces, a master key allows the person in charge to have access to all the rooms using just one key. In order to have this kind of key, the locks and the respective keys that will be used on all the doors of the building must belong to the masterkey system.

Creating this kind of key is not done on a haphazard basis. It is a key that is tailor fitted relative to the door lock combinations and the key cuts that belong in the said system. There are locksmith companies that specialise on this kind of security system. Imagine how easy and manageable it is to stay on top of the security system of a 15-floor apartment building. Instead of having a bunch of keys on a chain, having that one key to lock and open doors on all the 15 floors makes security management as easy as 1,2 and 3.

Whenever a disaster or an emergency strikes in any of the rooms on the 15 floors of the said building, the superintendent only needs to bring with him one key in order to come to the tenants' rescue.  In instances of a fire or an emergency evacuation, trapped rooms can be easily opened using the master key. Aside from having the capacity to open all doorlocks that belong in a system, there are also master keys that can open all padlocks in a given padlock system. This works especially handy for places with lockers or cabinets that are heavily guarded due to the contents found stored inside.

With this kind of key as part of the overall security feature of a building, one can easily prevent the incidence of unauthorised entry and exits. The only responsibility one needs to be cognizant about when handling a master key is that this key must be kept safe and hidden from unauthorised hands. This kind of key can be extremely helpful or an extreme disadvantage once left in the hands of the wrong people. Even if it is only a key, it has so much power when you think about it. For hotel management, a master key or a master card key is usually assigned to cleaning or utility personnel so that they can have access to the rooms they need to clean or service without bothering the tenants of the room.

Cleaning and utility personnel must be trustworthy to begin with so that they will not use the master key or the master key card granted to them for unwarranted reasons. It is essential that while there are building managers and superintendents around to manage the overall security of a building, they must guard the master key with all their might. Spare copies of this kind of key can also be helpful especially in the event when the original copy gets lost due to unforeseen circumstances.
